PalmSource has fulfilled its commitment to deliver the next major release of the Palm OS before the end of 2003. Palm OS 6 was shipped to licensees on December 29, 2003. Palm claims that the product combines the flexibility, simplicity and ease of use that are the traditional strengths of Palm OS with the emergent operating system requirements that meet the demands anticipated for tomorrow's smart mobile devices. These requirements include modularity, multi-tasking, memory protection, robust security and state-of-the-art multimedia capabilities. “Palm OS 6 is a major milestone for PalmSource, and we are happy to deliver the final version on schedule,” said Larry Slotnick, chief products officer at PalmSource. “We believe that our team has developed a tremendous product for our licensees to bring innovative Palm Powered mobile products into new markets.” PalmSource has also announced Palm Powered Expert Guides — the Web's most comprehensive directory of Palm OS applications, online resources, e-books and user stories. These are designed to turn any Palm Powered handheld or smartphone into the ultimate personal and professional companion. The 35 Expert Guides (25 more are in development) have been compiled by users from the Palm OS community. With more than 21,000 applications available for Palm powered smart mobile devices, the Expert Guides offer users an online tool to customise and extend the usability of their device based on specific areas of interest including medicine, real-estate and food and wine. “Many people are not aware of the versatility of Palm Powered handhelds and smartphones,” said Michael Mace, chief competitive officer of PalmSource, Inc. “We believe the Expert Guides not only offer users a great resource to learn what they can do, but the guides also provide exposure for our Palm OS software developers, who have created some of the most innovative and useful products in the industry.” The Expert Guides are available at
