Bahrain is to issue a tendor later in the month for construction of the first power plant to be built in Hidd. The project is expected to be worth up to US$ 600 million. “The plant will have a capacity of 1000 MW a day and will become operational in 2006,” said Mahmood Kooheji, director of government shareholdings at the finance and economy ministry. “Instead of putting up $500 million outright to build the plant, the government will pay that amount over 20 years by buying units from the company that will operate the facility and supplying consumers,” he continued. Consultants for the project include Britain’s Mott MacDonald and the French bank, Paribas. Alstom Power of France is also currently expanding an electrical power and desalination plant in Hidd that was opened two years ago.
