BMW Group Middle East sold 10,251 units in 2003, a figure that was on target and slightly above 10,205 units sold in 2002. The German luxury car maker’s biggest market was the UAE where it sold 3,188 units, followed by Saudi Arabia with 2,213 and Kuwait with 1,500. BMW declared itself satisfied with the results in what it said had been a challenging year. “After five years of phenomenal growth during which Middle East sales have increased from 4,898 units in 1999 to 10,251 units today, BMW Group Middle East is still setting new records,” said Robert Bailey-McEwan, outgoing managing director of BMW Group Middle East. “The latest figures show BMW Group as the No1 German manufacturer of premium, high performance luxury cars in the GCC and Levant – a tremendous achievement in what has been a challenging year of regional conflict and a high Euro exchange rate.” BMW is looking forward to another satisfactory performance in 2004 with the launch of the new 6 Series Coupé, 6 Series Convertible, the 1 Series and additions to the X family of sports utility vehicles. The regional office is also mulling an entry into the Indian market, where BMW is not formally represented. “We had plans five years ago, but had to drop them because of changes in Indian government regulations. Now, it is different and we are hopeful of making an entry this year,” said Lueder Paysen, senior vice-president, sales, Asia, Pacific, Africa and East Europe. “We need to determine what form our presence will take, whether it should be a sales subsidiary, joint venture or an assembly operation.” Robert Bailey-McEwan is moving to a global position based at BMW headquarters in Munich. His successor is Guenther Seemann, who has been heading operations in China.
