Omantel, the Sultanate’s incumbent operator, has handed an EUR18million deal to Siemens to modernise its telecoms network. The agreement covers the introduction of SS7 signaling technology in the operator’s next-generation overlay network as well as the modernisation of its TDM switching systems with Siemens’ EWSD software. The vendor will also provide maintenance of the systems and training of personnel in Oman. It says that the project will help Omantel to meet growing demand for signaling capacity, as a result of data from its intelligent network (IN) and increases in SMS traffic. The EWSD software is intended to allow the operator to migrate more simply to a next generation network. Around 280,000 EWSD ports are currently installed in Oman.
