Former German football World Cup winning captain and manager, Franz Beckenbauer is gearing up for a new role as Emirates Airline global ambassador for sport and social activities after signing a three-year contract today (Jan 12) with the Dubai-based carrier. Beckenbauer, who is the current president of Bayern Munich and the only man to have lifted the World Cup as captain and manager, revealed that the deal would bring closer co-operation between Emirates and the Franz Beckenbauer Foundation. “It is a great honour to be appointed as Emirates Global Ambassador and I am delighted that [the airline] has agreed to support the foundation,” said Beckenbauer. “Emirates’ aspirations, its passion for quality and its increasing involvement in the global football community make this a truly exciting assignment.” Part of the deal will see Beckenbauer representing Emirates at a host of football, sporting and social events starting in March this year with his possible inclusion in the Professional-Amateur golf competition of the Dubai Desert Classic. Emirates will hope that Beckenbauer’s leadership and managerial qualities will bring it an extra competitive edge. Having already signed a lucrative sponsorship deal with English Premiership outfit Chelsea and becoming an official partner for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the airline is positioning itself towards the top of the table. “I am delighted that Franz has agreed to become our Global Ambassador and am happy to support this important foundation,” said HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of Emirates Group. “As one of the world’s legendary footballers, his international reputation can only enhance the Emirates vision for success both socially through his foundation and for his contribution to sport in general.”
