Humanitarian group, Télécoms Sans Frontières (TSF), has responded to the earthquake in Iran by setting up a centre to help other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to co-ordinate their relief efforts. The group has set up a data transmission and internet connection centre incorporating satellite operator, Inmarsat’s mini-M units for voice communications and Regional BGAN terminals for high-speed data communications. The centre, which received EUR34,000 in funding from the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), is geared towards allowing local and international organisations to communicate with their head offices and enabling them to co-ordinate their activities more easily. According to TSF, it has also proved important for administrative purposes, in detailing fatalities and those in need of medication. "The Regional BGAN equipment has proved invaluable to us and other organisations. Thanks to the Regional BGAN terminal we were recently able to transmit medical reports and a necessary digital image of an Iranian girl who needs an operation in France,” says a spokesperson for the group. TSF says it has also been providing communications direct to the Iranian people. After its arrival in Bam on December 28, the group carried out an evaluation of the population’s telecoms needs. A humanitarian telecoms centre for the Iranian population in distress was opened on December 30 within the Iranian Red Cross' central office. From there, survivors can make phone calls both to people in Iran and abroad so they can tell their friends and family they are alive and ask them for help.
