Sales of desktops, notebooks and servers from Acer Computers have boomed in the UAE, with share of the overall hardware market growing almost 300% in one year. Analyst house IDC reports that the boost in sales propelled Acer to be ranked third in the market — up from its sixth ranking for the same period 2002. Growth during the same period of time for desktop sales was also strong. Acer’s grip on this sector in the UAE grew from 2.7% in the third quarter of 2002 to 9.5% 2003. Holding the third position in the desktop market, Acer recorded almost 240% growth on the same time last year. Strong development was also recorded by Acer in the mobile segment. With an almost 470% increase on results from the same period last year, Acer moved from fifth in the market to fourth. Similarly, Acer moved to fourth ranking in the server market — up from fifth in the previous year. “The clear message from these latest independent results is that Acer is taking a greater share of the business in the UAE across the board in the hardware sector,” says Philip Ashkar, Acer’s director, sales and marketing. “Acer has achieved an impressive increase in its revenue growth for the UAE based on the company’s commitment to extending its product range and implementing an effective channel strategy,” he adds. Acer Computer ME’s general manager, Krishna Murthy, says: “We are impressed with the success that has been achieved in the past year. The entire team at Acer, extending from management through to our reseller channel, has been dedicated to promoting and driving our products in the market. “This commitment has resulted in Acer being recognized as one of the leading providers of cutting-edge technology in the country. It is impressive that we have experienced so much growth, however we aim for even more during the next few quarters,” adds Muthy. Acer Computer (ME) has its own facility in the Jebel Ali Free Zone.
