UAE-based Al Ghaith Holding, Midrex Technologies and VAI Fuchs GMBH, have signed pre-engineering contracts the implementation of a DRI plant and mini-steel mill. The facility, to be called Hamil Steel, will produce some 500,000 tonnes DRI/HBI including 300,000 tonnes of billets. The equipment to be included in the scope of supply consists of a Midrex DRI module, electric arc furnace, a ladle furnace, a de-dusting system and a continuous casting machine. The plant will be designed to operate with mainly hot DRI, which will be produced by a Midrex hotlink module located at the same site. The equipment being used is a ‘state-of-the-art’ design. The plant’s process control is based on a modern automated system. The decision to a build smelt shop represents a further step for the group to strengthen its position in different industrial fields. Al Ghaith’s erection, procurement and construction (EPC) arm, Advanced Projects Development, will execute the local portion for the project. Midrex and VAI Fuchs will supply the core process equipment. Al Gaith’s decision to sign up with Midrex and VAI Fuchs is based on the experience of both companies in the fields of direct reduction and electric steel making. Midrex Technologies, is an international process engineering and technology company that provides global process technology solutions to various industries and is principally known for the Midrex direct reduction process that converts iron ore/pellets into a high-purity DRI or HBI for use in steel making, iron making and foundry applications. Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau (VAI), a company of the listed VA Technologie AG, is a engineering and plant-building companies for the iron, steel and aluminium industries with a multinational company structure and special focus on technology, automation and services.
