Qatar Airways is to lease three Airbus A330-200s from GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS). The first two will enter service in the next few weeks, with the third coming on line in June 2005. The Qatari flag carrier currently leases an A320 from GECAS and it has already agreed to take delivery of two new A330-200 aircraft from the leasing company in the summer. It will also now receive two more this year, one this month and one in February. “We are very pleased to extend our relationship with one of the leading carriers in the Middle East,” states GECAS’s executive vice president for commercial operations, Norman Liu. At the Dubai air show, Qatar Airways also firmed up the large Airbus order it announced at Paris during the summer. This comprised of two A380s, with options for two more, and two A340-600s with options for another eight. Deliveries of the A340-600s will begin in June 2006, while the A380s will begin to arrive in early 2009. “We see a need for the A340-600 on our medium-to-high capacity long-haul routes, as well as for the larger A380 on our most heavily travelled services,” explains Qatar Airways’s chief executive officer, Akbar AI-Baker. “And we look forward to the commonality benefits that our all-Airbus fleet will bring us in both cost savings and operational flexibility,” he continues
