Air Algérie has continued its fleet renovation programme by ordering five Boeings 737s. The carrier has also agreed to establish an MRO joint venture with EADS Sogerma Services in Algiers. The North African carrier is overhauling much of its fleet at present. It recently ordered five A330-200s and six ATR 72-500s, and it has now agreed to buy three new Boeing Next-Generation 737-800s. These will be added to Air Algérie’s already large fleet of Boeings, which currently comprises 36 new and classic single- and twin-aisle Boeing aircraft, including seven 737-800 and five 737-600 models. Alongside the 737 order, Air Algérie has also signed a joint venture deal with EADS Sogerma Services to enhance its maintenance capabilities at the recently expanded Houari Boumédienne International. The deal creates a joint venture that will allow the carrier to handle MRO activities for its own fleet, as well as offering services to other airlines and operators. It will operate in an centre at Houari Boumédienne, which includes a 27 000 m2 hanger, as well as 22 000 m2 of workshop and office space. The centre will also be certified to European JAR 145 standards. “EADS Sogerma Services is pleased to enter this joint venture, which extends the relationship that has developed with Air Algérie during the past two years,” says Yves Richard, president, EADS Sogerma Services. “The new agreement will enable us to bring together our capabilities and resources to best serve the needs of Air Algérie and the region,” he adds. “Our agreement with EADS Sogerma Services will allow Air Algérie to enter a new phase of development for its aircraft maintenance capacity — benefiting from the investments we have made in our capable new facilities at Algiers,” says Mohamed Tayeb Benouis, Air Algérie’s chairman & CEO.
