Fujairah International Airport has installed a Nova 9000 approach control system supplied by Al Bayanat and Park Air Systems. The system will improve safety levels at the airport and also allow it to handle more aircraft more effectively. “The new equipment provides more precise information on the altitude, location and all round situation of the aircraft,” says Khaled Almazroui, general manager, Fujairah International Airport. “The new technology is here so we have to update our existing systems because we don’t want to be left behind.” The Nova 9000 features a menu selection of up to eight runways, resizable windows for glide-slope and localiser, as well as configurable visual and audible alarms. It also includes an approach funnel deviation alert system (AFDAS) software module, which shows lateral deviation from the runway centre line and any other vertical altitude deviations from the glide-slope. Al Bayanat was one of four companies to submit a proposal for the approach control project, and before deciding which vendor to go with, Fujairah asked other regional airports for advice about the systems they used. “We did not take the proposals on face value because they are all sales driven,” says Almazroui. “We made sure we talked to end users in the Middle East and the Gulf. These users are other regional airports and if they all say the product is good then it makes it easy for us to make a decision to buy the product.” The airport also assessed the quality of each company’s post-purchase service, and contacted managers from Dubai and Bahrain Airports to discuss their experiences with the various vendors. “It is important we check their [the region’s airports] acceptance of the post-purchase services,” says Almazroui. “The after-sales service is very important to us because we have been supplied with equipment in the past and the post-purchase services were very poor. This [consultation] process makes the quality better for everyone,” he concludes.
