Oman’s initial technology park has opened its doors for business. Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM), situated near Sultan Qaboos University and Rusayl Industrial Estate, boasts approximately 12,000 square meters of office and incubator space.

The park was inaugurated by His Excellency, Ahmed Abdul Nabi Macki, Minister of National Economy on Saturday, in front of a congregation of businessmen, government officials and representatives from the nearby university.

“This is the right time and the right place for a high-tech park,” says Mohammed Al Ghassani, Director, Knowledge Oasis Muscat.

“High-tech firms are a relatively new industry in Oman, yet they form the very backbone of our economy. It's clear that KOM will bring us one step closer to the innovation-based economy that will sustain Oman through the 21st century,” he adds.

KOM hopes to bring together three key ingredients necessary for information technology innovation — a sound IT infrastructure, local talent from nearby educational institutions and commercial opportunity. Local and international companies setting up in KOM will be able to recruit young talent emerging from Sultan Qaboos University and two ICT colleges on the park.

International vendors that have already signed up for the KOM include Siemens and NCR.

“KOM is creating the infrastructure, local educational institutions will provide commercial potential from research and a talented labour pool. Thirdly, industry, both domestic and international will add entrepreneurship, producing marketable ideas, services and products to be sold throughout the world,” comments Ahmed Al Dheeb, executive president, Public Establishment for Industrial Estates.
