Emirates Computers (EC) will have its usual commanding presence in hall 4. The UAE distributor and systems integrator will be showcasing a range of solutions from its principles, including computing hardware from Dell, knowledge management solutions from Open Text, technical computing solutions from SGI, mobile technology from Nokia and consulting services from sister company, Hyperlink.

For the last two years, EC has been encouraging businesses to 're-build' their organisations to create knowledge-driven companies. This year, the distributor is promoting the competitive advantage that knowledge-centric companies can deliver. "We're telling businesses to leverage their [information technology investment] and gain a competitive edge," says company president, Hani Harik.

At the core of Emirates Computers' vision of the knowledge driven company, is a knowledge management (KM) solution. Most of the automation in the region has focused on either front end operations, or organising back end functions. However, most companies have yet to automate their day-to-day procedures or capture the data that is generated by employees.

According to Hani, many companies need to take the next step and bring a much greater degree of management control, knowledge capture and measurement to their organisation.

"This is about automating a company's operations. It enables a company to measure the effectiveness of those operations," says Harik.

Growing competitive pressure will force more local organisations to embrace knowledge management and create an information-centric business.

Any shift to a knowledge driven company usually requires a considerable amount of change management. EC has had to work closely with several companies to identify certain business processes, improve them and educate customers about the value of automated workflows and internal benchmarking.
