Shangri-La moves to Doha

Shangri-La is strengthening its Middle East presence with a new hotel in Doha.

Shangri-La Hotel & Resorts will open a 35-storey 250-room five star hotel prior to the Asian Games in Doha in 2006. The hotel company has signed a management agreement with Al Rayan Tourism Development Company. The new hotel will be adjacent a large shopping complex and connected to a convention centre.

"Our target is to build a regional presence of about eight to ten hotels, and we are delighted to be opening a hotel in Doha. The Shangri-La Hotel, Doha reconfirms our commitment to expanding in the Middle East," said Giovanni Angelini, Shangri-La's CEO and managing director.

Shangri-La's first hotel in the Middle East, the Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai, opened in July 2003 to be followed by the economy Traders Hotel, Dubai in October this year. It's property in Oman, the Barr Al-Jissah Resort & Spa, is slated to open in 2005.

The Hong Kong-based company currently manages 41 hotels in Australia, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with a rooms inventory of over 20,000.
