EADS Astrium has been named as the preferred supplier of two new satellites for Arabsat, the Saudi Arabia-based service provider.

The French design and manufacturing company will be responsible for building Arabsat 4-A and 4-B, Arabsat's fourth generation of satellites.

Both will be based on the Euro E2000+ platform, while rival supplier Alcatel will provide the satellites' payload.

Arabsat, which provides TV, telephony, internet and private digital communications services throughout the Middle East and North Africa, is expected to sign the supplier contracts in Riyadh later this month.
