Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company is utilising an advanced visual system for oil exploration in the region thanks to Gitex exhibitor Emirates Computers.

The technology company used Silicon Graphics' SGI Onyx 3900 for the project. This supercomputer visualises the oil fields and transforms the data into graphical models.

"The large data sets and numbers coming from oil fields need specialised technology to transform the data into graphics. Speedy and accurate processing is of critical importance explains Silicon Graphics' Gilbert Soufan.

The oil producing Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company turned to Emirates Computers because it felt it needed a faster processing solution for the task.

"Oil fields are complex to visualise as their shapes keep changing. The need to speed up the processing of the data prompted us to scout for more advanced and proven technologies to upgrade our visualisation capabilities," explains Ahmed Al Riyami, reservoir applications & systems team leader, Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company.

"We assigned Emirates Computers to identify the best vendors," he adds.

Emirates Computers president, Hani Harik, believes previous deals helped his company to win the contract. "As leading supplier of innovative solutions for different industries, including some top oil companies in the UAE, we had the right credentials," he argues.

Several other companies around the world successfully use the SGI Onyx 3900 in the world. This helped when picking the solution. "The high track record of the SGI Onyx 3900 as one the most reliable and high performance visual systems in the world meant it emerged as the ideal system," says Harik.
