Cisco Systems has brought its next generation of colour-screen IP phones to Gitex. The 7970G unit, which is taking centre stage on the vendor's stand, has a high resolution, colour touch-screen. More importantly, the phone also has XML and network application support, which enables users to browse for information and access business data through the device.

"This is only one of 12 units in the world," says Ralph Schmidt, AVVID consultant with Cisco Middle East. "The colour display is more granular and enables a full display of information," he explains.

The 7970G will initially be a high end unit, used by a few senior management within large business organisations, or technical staff members in the IT department that require a high level of integration. However, colour screen IP phones will proliferate through enterprise accounts over time, predicts Schmidt. "I believe this technology will come into the mid-range in about six months, to a year's time. It is always the same, this technology starts at the top, and then flows down," he adds.

After a slow start in the local market, IP telephony has been gaining momentum across the region. Reference sites in the region include DIC and the Qatar Olympic Committee. "A lot of companies are finding themselves with out-dated technology, so instead of upgrading they are moving to an IP-based network," says Schmidt.
