Gemplus is promoting its smartcard solutions in the DIC Community Zone, following up on some noticeable customer wins in the region. The company is the lead implementer for the Royal Omani Police Force’s ID card programme, and it is also set to do a similar project in the UAE.

The Omani project is set to go live on the 18th November with 1.2 million cards being distributed in the first batch. The UAE project promises to be even larger with 2 million cards eventually being distributed. At Gitex, the company is looking to make contact with other governments in the region looking to undertake similar projects.

Gemplus is also looking to win customers in the banking sector. This is a hot area for the company as banks are under pressure from MasterCard and Visa to migrate off cards with magnetic stripes to smartcards instead.
