Technoworld, the distribution arm of Emirates Computers, has been appointed Dell's high volume distributor in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. The deal signifies hardware vendor's intention to aggressively chase opportunities in the small-to-medium business (SMB) and consumer segment.

"Dell has traditionally gone direct, this is the first time ever they have signed a distributor," say Hani Harik, president, Emirates Computers.

"This deal is timely, as Dell is expanding into printers, PDAs, small network switches and hubs, and OEM screens. We are talking about a very comprehensive product portfolio for the SMB segment," he adds.

The agreement also comes at a time when market rival, HP, has recently announced a significant push on the local SMB segment starting in the next two weeks. Harik, however, is bullish about the partnership's prospects.

"[Technoworld and Dell] have managed to capture 14% market share in the UAE's PC market. We have to do at least that in every market we go into," he adds.
