Etihad, the UAE’s new national airline has been formally launched with a ceremonial flight from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain.

Commercial operations are due to start on November 12 with the first of three weekly scheduled flights from Abu Dhabi to Beirut. This service will be followed with flights to the Syrian capital, Damascus. Etihad will also fly to the Indian subcontinent, the Far East and the UK.

“As our fleet of aircraft grows and our network of destinations expands across the Middle East and beyond, Etihad will be the standard bearer for excellence,” said Sheik Ahmed, chairman of Etihad.

The airline will begin operations with two wide-bodied Airbus A330-200 jets with a view to expanding the fleet at a later date. The A330-220 will be the exclusive choice for the Etihad fleet.
