Etisalat has awarded a contract to French telecoms equipment supplier, Alcatel, to expand its existing intelligent networks (IN) in the UAE.

The project, according to Alcatel, will provide Etisalat with a platform for the delivery of services such as MMS, and ultimately video and audio streaming.

Alcatel, which won the deal in an open tender, will supply Etisalat with a complete IN solution built on its Open Services Platform (OSP), to cover the entire UAE.

The solution includes Alcatel's Prepaid Suites (PPS), giving the operator the ability to apply prepaid charging in real time for voice, data and content in a GPRS network.

Alcatel says the OSP will allow new application and payment modules to be added
to run 3G applications, while its new generation payment solution can extend voice, data, content, and messaging delivery into prepaid and post-paid platforms.

The network and associated services are expected to be operational in the UAE by the end of 2003.
