Qatar mobile users will soon be able to send pictures phone-to-phone with enhanced multimedia functions following Siemens mobile being awarded a contract to extend its range of services offered to Qtel consumers in the region.

Siemens mobile will install a Multimedia Messaging Service Centre (MMSC) and Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) services, delivered over the existing General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) platform to Qtel customers with the new services, expected to go live by the end of 2003.

The contract is not the first to be awarded to Seimens by Qtel, as the two companies had previously worked together on progressing Qatars mobile system since with the set up of the country's first GPRS system.

"Following the successful live launch of Qtel's GPRS service Mobinet in July, we are delighted to enable this expansion of services, having led the development since its inception. The ongoing success of this project can be attributed to Qtel's professionalism and commitment, along with Siemens mobile's proven expertise in GPRS and its reliable technology", says Soenke Peters, vice president and head of Siemens mobile networks, Middle East.

"As a team, we successfully rose to the challenge to empower Qtel within a set time frame and manage a multi-vendor environment. We look forward to replicating this success with the new contract", he adds.

Qtel currently has a growing subscriber base of 365,000 and is looking to build a long-term partnership with Siemens mobile to service the anticipated customer increase. The continuing relationship with Qtel will enable delivery of enhanced application and content, specifically adapted to the Middle East environment.

"Qtel is always committed to bringing the latest products and services to our customers. This involves working together with companies that lead the market today and have a solid reputation for providing us with the best. Siemens is one of the major driving forces behind GPRS, EDGE and UMTS and is uniquely positioned to supply leading-edge technology to all our customers here in Qatar, the region and the world," comments Dr Nasser Marafiah, CEO of Qtel.
