More than 100 software, web and content developers attended the first IBM Developer Works Live! which kicked off in Dubai today for the Middle East region.

Developer Works is a global IBM technical developer event that shares new technologies, skills and resources to develop internet based business solutions and web services. The event was hosted in Dubai by IBM and its partner Gulf Business Machines (GBM).

"This is an important event for us in the Middle East as it is the first time that we've been able to bring the IBM Web Services team to engage directly with developers in our region. It's been a great event and we'll be following up with more developer focused events in the region as a result," says Bashar Kilani, software group manager for IBM Middle East, Egypt and Pakistan.

Delegates at the all-day briefing event each received packs of web services applications and source code as well as Linux based software and toolkits to support the deployment of web-based solutions. The event also had briefings on internet services development, security and deploying open standard software for business on the internet.

Developer Works was created by IBM in late 1999, to compete closely with Microsoft's Developer Network (MSDN). It works with developers on a worlwide basis to create new software based on IBM's DB2, eServer, Lotus, Rational, Tivoli, WebSphere and Linux development platforms.

"IBM is investing to build awareness and capabilities in the Middle East's developer community so that businesses can drive competitive advantage using online technologies. This event is part of an ongoing drive to bring IBM's global software and content development expertise to the region," says Mohammed Kara, marketing manager, software group, IBM Middle East.
