MSI, the Taiwanese optical drive giant, has unveiled its latest external DVD burner writer, which boasts a whopping 8x recording speed.

Providing faster 8x DVD+R writing speeds and multiple writing formats, the DR8-A also features a meaty specifications list. It allows users to work at 8 different formats and speeds, which are as follows: DVD+R writing speed at 8x, DVD+RW rewriting speed at 4x, DVD-R writing speed at 4x, DVD-RW rewriting speed at 2x, DVD-ROM reading speed at 12x, CD-R writing speed at 40x, CD-RW rewriting speed at 24x and CD-ROM reading speed at 40x.

This latest release reflects a period of consolidation in the burning industry, with more dual compatibility for both of the two competing formats, DVD minus (-) and DVD plus (+). Sony released the world's first dual format DVD Writer, the DRU-510, back in October 2002 and the major manufacturers, MSI included, have followed in 2003. Supporting both DVD+R/+RW and DVD-R/-RW discs in just one drive has proven popular amongst Middle East consumers.

The DR8-A features Anti-Bumping System (ABS) technology to absorb shock and reduce vibrations, making reading and writing of discs more accurate. Another great feature, BURN-Proof, can prevent buffer under run and minimise recording failures.

In addition, once the DVD¦R/¦RW disc has been created by the DR8-A, the drive allows users to play it from standard DVD-ROM or DVD Player without any compatibility issues.

One of the industries hottest developments, High Density Burn (HD-BURN), is also supported by the DR8-A. This writing technology can record twice the capacity of specified CD-R discs, a definite bonus for any high volume user. For example, a user can store 1,400MB data on a 700MB CD-R disc, which is a powerful solution for cost saving as well as convenience.

The DR8-A comes equipped with some of the markets most popular software, including Nero Burning ROM, PowerDVD, MyDVD and ShowBiz. All of these editing software packages allow users to make the most of this DVD burner, from film editing to copying DVDs.
