According to the IDC's results for the third quarter (Q3) of 2003, PC shipments in the Arab Middle East market reached 380,438 units, up 24.5% from the same period last year. Growth came from all three computing components - desktops, notebooks and PC Servers which grew at 13.8%, 95.8% and 27.8% respectively.

The latest IDC results for Q3 2003 in the UAE indicate that PC shipments grew by 15.2% year-on-year, to reach 71,558 units. Most of the growth came from the PC server segment as it increased by almost 66.6% year-on-year.

"This comes as a result of the continued aggressive targeting of the low-end servers towards the fast growing SMB segment by almost all vendors of PC servers in the UAE," says Omar Shihab, research analyst, IDC Middle East & North Africa (MENA). Notebooks also witnessed strong growth of 49.7% year-on-year, driven by new Centrino model notebooks with wireless capabilities, newer models in the Pentium-4 line and variants like the tablet PC.

IDC estimates increase in shipment levels from 'The Dubai Summer Surprises festival' and computer trade shows like Gitex 2003, which pushed sales for notebook and overall PC unit shipments. The desktop segment on the other hand witnessed a slight decline of 2.9% of shipments year-on-year.

This decline comes despite of vendor's launch of new desktop models based on Intel's new hyper threading chipset, in addition to shipments being delivered to several end-users in the country, namely the Abu-Dhabi ministry of education.

According to IDC, the flat results from the UAE market indicate saturation and a trend towards becoming a replacement market for desktops, particularly for medium and large enterprises.
