Five bids have been made for the design of new bridges to replace the existing Sitra links in Bahrain. The consultants tender values range from US $2.9 million to US $4.2 million, Bahrain’s Ministry of State and Tender Board chairman Dr Abdul Hussain Mirza says. The tender values are: Parsons Global Services – US $3.6 million; Hyder Consulting – US $4.3 million; Ismail Khonji/High Point Rendel – US $3.1 million; DHV UK Ltd – US $3.2 million; and Cowi Almoayyed Gulf – US $3.6 million. Dr Mirza added that the bids would go to the Works and Housing Ministry for final evaluation. Once the new US $55 million three-lane causeway and bridges project is complete, the existing Sitra Causeway bridges will be demolished, says Assistant Under-Secretary for Roads Essam Khalaf. The Works and Housing Ministry has already carried out two studies on the existing Sitra Causeway, says Khalaf. One of the studies reviewed the structural integrity of the bridges while the other focused on the traffic capacity. “Due to the increasing maintenance costs coupled with the current ban on loaded heavy goods vehicles using the existing bridges, it was decided to construct new bridges,” says Khalaf. The construction of the new bridges will be organised in such a way that the existing traffic flows would not be affected. “The appointed consultant will be required to provide a design solution that will allow the new bridges to be constructed whilst allowing the existing traffic to continue along this highway,” Khalaf says. Once the design is completed, the project will be forwarded for construction. The project will comprise a new northern bridge 216 m long, the same as the existing one.
