Computer Associates (CA) has broadened its Unicenter product family with the addition of Unicenter Network Forensics. The solution is designed to help enterprises monitor, identify and troubleshoot any problems that could lead to systems or service downtime before they occur. The product, which is installed on a dedicated server, uses software agents known as ‘collectors’ to monitor network agents. According to the vendor, these collectors differ from other agents because they are capable of monitoring several devices simultaneously if the traffic is not too heavy. In comparison, other solutions require individual agents for each device, claims CA.The agents monitor network traffic patterns to detect any potential points of failure or problems, for example, an overworked router, a sluggish server or poor desktop application performance. Administrators are immediately informed if any problem or abnormality is detected. Furthermore, the software collects, collates and stores data to help network staff identify and track network trends more clearly.“Service organisations cannot afford down time,” says Noman Qadir, director of enterprise management solutions at Computer Associates Middle East (CA-ME). “The whole idea of Unicenter Network Forensics is to help users spot problems, such as deteriorating performance, before they cripple the business-critical applications,” he adds.CA has also introduced a mobile edition of the Forensics solution, which users can install on their laptops and enables network administrators to monitor access points and individual department servers and identify any rogue access points or wireless users. Additionally, both the standard platform and the mobile edition of Forensics offer CA’s Sonar technology, which analyses traffic and provides information about the relationships between network devices, servers, storage and applications. The technology also works in real time to speed problem response times, reduce system downtime and boost performance.
