Sony is crediting the UAE’s expanding hot spot coverage with its decision to make its entry into the PDA market here. The company is launching a range of wireless-enabled handhelds, the CLIE Handheld, in the UAE market, and is looking to capture 20% market share within the next year.

“One of Sony’s missions is to create an environment to enable customers to access information wherever and whenever they want,” said Yasuhide Yokota, managing director Sony Gulf FZE. “Personal entertainment organisers will play a key role in meeting these demands and the time is now right for us to enter the PDA market in the UAE, especially as the use of mobile internet is experiencing a rapid growth.”

Sony is introducing three CLIE Handheld models, the PEG-SJ33/G, retailing at 1090 dirhams, the PEG-TG50/G which comes in at 1290 dirhams, and its flagship model, the PEG-NX80V/G, which will retail for 2140 dirhams. Sony said it will maintain a fair pricing model for the Handheld.

While Sony executives demonstrated the NX80V/G’s 1.2 mega pixel rotating camera at the press conference launching the range, the main focus was on the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality of the product. With an optional wireless LAN card, users can surf the internet at one of Dubai’s growing number of hot spots, executives pointed out.

However, Sony has no plans at all to provide Arabic support or features, executives said, arguing that it is very much down to third-party developers to write Arabic applications for the Palm OS which powers the CLIE.
