Two new Itanium 2 processors from Intel to cut cost of technical computing

New Itanium 2 processors designed to make high-end dual processor servers available at lower cost and with better power consumption

Intel has released two new Itanium 2 processors for dual-processor servers. The new additions have been designed to enable lower cost and lower power consumption for high performance computing.

The Intel Itanium 2 processor, running at 1.4 GHz with 1.5MB of level three cache has been designed to reduce the cost of technical computing. The processor is optimised for dual processor deployments, and its competitive pricing mean it is possible to use it as the basis of a system costing under $7,000. The processor can also generate industry leading price per gigaflop performance, according to the Linpack HPC benchmark.

The second chip is the Low Voltage Itanium 2 processor, which runs at 1GHz with a 1.5MB level cache. The processor has a maximum power consumption of 62 watts, less than half the power of previous Itanium 2 processors. This makes it suited to network edge and software engineering uses, where power consumption and cost are driving factors.

Richard Dracott, group marketing director for Intel’s Enterprise Platforms Group commented: “Itanium 2 processor-based systems deliver industry-leading performance, business value and choice for data-intensive, business-critical enterprise solutions. With these new processors, Itanium 2-based systems can now power virtually all facets of the data centre, from entry-level systems to supercomputers and massive database servers.”

Intel is hoping to see the number of Itanium-based systems from Dell, Hp and IBM double this year to over 40 models for workstation and server deployments, along with an increasing number of rack optimised Itanium-based systems.
