Regional IT distributor Aptec is in the process of consolidating its presence as one of the regions biggest independent IT distributors with the building of a new unified warehouse facility in Jebel Ali.

The new warehouse will be one of the largest of its kind owned by an independent IT distributor in the region, comprising of five warehouses under one roof, with a storage space of 25,000 square feet.

“This has been a major development of our warehouse facilities, and its all been constructed by the Jebel Ali Free Zone, who’ve proved to have been a great help, they have excellent facilities,” said Anand Rai, logistics manager for Aptec. “By November we will have five warehouses, which are under construction right now. We’re the only IT distributor who has that much space on our own, as almost every other IT distributor out sources their logistics, and that’s one of our major strengths.”

Aptec’s storage facilities at Jebel Ali previously consisted of two separate locations, but the situation was problematic, as the deliveries had to be split between the two.

“If you see in Jebel Ali, they lease out these single units to you, and we’ve had two units in one location. When we first needed to expand, the unit next to us wasn’t vacant at that time, so we had to take these units about a couple hundred metres down the road, and that was again two units combined into one,” explained Rai.

With an almost 35% year on year business increase, Aptec’s logistics have become increasingly tested by the success of its product base. The company is expected to see an increase in staff in the coming months as well as the opening consolidated facility; Rai said the expansion offers numerous opportunities.

“Well if everything’s under one roof its easier to control, there’s a lot more visibility, we can get goods out a lot faster, because if we’ve got warehouses in different locations, we can only offload one container at a time. But if you’re under one roof, I’ve got around five loading areas so I can offload five containers, and I can load five containers for customers at the same time as well. So our customers can look forward to receiving their shipments a lot faster.”

The completion of the warehouse facility is expected some time in mid-October with an anticipated move by the company sometime in November.
