Mobile joint venture, Sony Ericsson, has unveiled its first GSM-based ‘clamshell’ models as part of a portfolio of consumer-oriented phones to be launched later this year.

The company will bring three new colour screen devices into the Middle East market during Q4, including the entry-level, gaming oriented T230, which also can take pictures with an attachable camera accessory.

The clamshell-shaped Z600, which includes an in-built camera, has been designed to address the higher end of the market, while another clamshell effort, the Z200, will take on numerous similar devices from rivals such as Motorola, Samsung and LG.

“The Z200 is a unique product which also offers an alternative to the standard clamshell phones which are enjoying great popularity at the moment,” says Mats Paulson, Sony Ericsson general manager for the Middle East and Africa.

Sony Ericsson said that the Z230 would cost around Dh600 when it is launched, while the Z200 and Z600 will set users back Dh800 and Dh 1500 respectively.

A range of accessories will also be made available during the same period to supplement the new portfolio.

These include the MCA-30 clip-on camera, designed for use with the T230, a Gameboard which allows users to play games in console style, a wireless headset, and a limited edition, tiny radio control car which connects with handsets via Bluetooth.

The Gameboard will cost around Dh200, and the Bluetooth Car Dh300.
