KAUH revamps operations with Medicom project

The 650-bed teaching hospital has rolled out Registration, Outpatient Management, Inpatient Management, as well as clinical Patient Care modules.

Jordan’s King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH) has overhauled its internal operations with the implementation of Medicom — an integrated healthcare management system.

The 650-bed teaching hospital has rolled out Registration, Outpatient Management, Inpatient Management modules, as welll as clinical Patient Care modules, such Operating Theatre, Radiology and Pharmacy and Laboratory systems.

“KAUH is ushering in a new era of healthcare,” says Dr. Abdullah Bataineh, Hospital IT director & project Director for healthcare information systems (HIS) at KAUH.

“A care environment that is patient centric, knowledge driven, reduces errors and delivers highest levels of efficiency and effectiveness. A comprehensive HIS solution like Medicom has provided us enormous benefits by helping to streamline our processes and minimise clinical risk, thus emphasising the value of automation at every step in the care delivery process,” he adds.

Medicom has helped KAUH to improve patient safety; mitigating errors in care delivery and improving operational procedure. The teaching hospital also embraced the workflow within Medicom, enabling KAUH to deploy functionality that was needed, such as ordering, prescribing and charting to solve their most pressing clinical efficiency problems first.

“This is a marked improvement from the days when the hospital was using manual processes for its operation, which was time intensive and prone to errors,” comments Dr. Bataineh.

KAUH is already reaping the benefits of increased accuracy and speed in its registration and scheduling processes. The automated registration process has accelerated patient flow from scheduling to treatment to check out, with the help of queue management capabilities, to reduce patient waiting time.

In addition, clinical and operational staff have been able to track patients, order status and create management reports.

The third phase of the project, to implement Billing, Insurance and Clinician Access modules and integrate them with the Oracle Financials application, is expected to go live soon.

With the final stage live complete, KAUH will start to build a clinical data repository that will form the basis of an electronic medical records system.
