US-based satellite communications provider Globecomm Systems has been picked to supply an international gateway to aid reconstruction efforts in Iraq.

The vendor, which is based New York but maintains offices in the UAE, UK and Hong Kong, was subcontracted to supply the gateway by engineering giant Bechtel, which is overseeing much of the repair work to Iraq’s infrastructure.

The move will allow voice, fax and data services to be provided in Iraq. Bechtel was handed US$45million last month by the US Agency for International Development (USAid) to manage the implementation of the gateway and projects to repair Iraq’s fixed and backbone networks.

“Globecomm’s swift mobilization and rapid deployment of critical resources vital to the early stages of the Iraq reconstruction efforts played a major role in this award,” claimed David Hershberg, CEO and chairman of Globecomm Systems.
