3Com had become the latest vendor to release fully compliant 802.11g wireless products. The OfficeConnect range, which includes access points, gateways and PC cards, is targeted towards small or home offices and hotspots.

The introduction of 802.11g has increased data transfer speeds on the 2.4GHz frequency from the 802.11b standard of 11 Mbits/s to 54 Mbits/s. Furthermore, the security is enhanced by the inclusion of the WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) protocol, which provides 256-bit encryption.

“The 3Com OfficeConnect Wireless 11g solution addresses two major issues with existing wireless product offerings — speed and security,” says Robert Winch, 3Com’s director responsible for OfficeConnect solutions.

“By combining the new robust encryption techniques with the industry’s new high speed, long-range wireless connectivity standards, 3Com is able to offer a competitively priced solution with 54 Mbits/s data rate and 256-bit security encryption at a distance of over 300 feet from the access point to PC card,” he adds.
