The government owned Qatar National Hotel Company, (QNHC), owner of most hotels in Qatar, has launched a hotel management company and an economy hotel brand called Merweb.

According to Jurgen Baumhoff, QNHC’s new CEO, the brand will be promoted regionally as a “hallmark of Qatari hospitality” and a chain of branded economy hotels will be introduced in other GCC states. “Under the Merweb brand, named after the 9th century AD Qatari fortress, we will also manage properties and facilities throughout the region. The first Merweb branded and managed property, the Merweb Al Sadd has been recently opened in Doha,” Baumhoff told Hotelier Middle East.

“We intend QNHC to become an asset developer as well as a manager. We will develop properties and leisure facilities on behalf of the Government of Qatar and, depending on the nature of the project, we will either manage these properties or hand it over to international operators. I believe branded economy hotels will be successful in Qatar and has a future in the region which is why our long term strategy is to grow the Merweb brand in the GCC,” says Baumhoff.

A former hotelier, Baumhoff who has worked with leading hotel companies like Six Continent’s, Hyatt and Kempinski, is revamping operations at QNHC. “I’m trying to put things in order. In order to focus on strategies and meet objectives, it is necessary to have the right structure in place,” he explains.
