Al Ghurair Group is cutting costs by migrating its Oracle E-Business suite of applications from a Windows platform to Linux. The group, which includes the Burjuman and Al Reef shopping malls, uses the Oracle suite for financial reporting and analysis across its real estate and manufacturing divisions.

The group’s IT team carried out the migration work in-house and it said it was already reaping the benefits, through increased availability and security and lower cost of ownership. Applications used by Al Ghurair include Oracle Financials, Oracle Property Manager, Oracle Enterprise Asset Management, and Oracle Supply Chain Management.

“Our decision to migrate from Windows to Linux was driven by the need to achieve higher uptime for our business while improving information security and reducing cost of ownership,” said Hatem Al-Sibai, group IT manager, Al Ghurair Group. “Oracle’s commitment to Linux made it far easier to make the right decision to move to Linux. We believe Linux is the right way forward and are proud of our information technology team who completed the migration in a record time.”

“Everyone knows Linux costs less, and Oracle makes it more reliable too,” said Ayman Abouseif, Oracle’s senior marketing director for the Middle East, Africa, Eastern and Central Europe. “Al Ghurair Group has taken a bold step and migrated to Linux. Organisations migrating to Linux should expect to achieve higher uptime and improved security at lower cost of ownership, enabling them to re-invest in strategic information technology initiatives.”
