UAE University has teamed up with speech recognition solutions provider Emerging Technologies to develop a bilingual voice portal for its staff and students. The portal, which will be available from September 2003, will enable students to register for courses and make grade inquiries through the telephone.

"UAE University, being a pioneer in adopting new technologies, has opted for a speech recognition solution to facilitate improved registration and grades tracking methodology for our 16,000 students, their parents and 2,500 faculty members," says Dr Mohammed Mansour, deputy vice chancellor for student affairs, UAE University. "Our voice portal will be the first of its type worldwide and we hope that universities all over the world will follow suit to ease administration processes," he adds.

The voice portal will enable students to register for a course, add or drop courses, confirm their registration for a specific subject or get information on course schedules through the telephone. It will also enable students to make inquiries on their semester grades, academic status and cumulative GPA. "With Emerging Technologies’ voice enabled solutions, students, faculty members and parents can easily use their natural language and local dialects to make telephone calls and access a university's portal content, finalise registration procedures and retrieve grades," says Sassine Mazraani, managing director, Emerging Technologies.
