Broadband DSL is the fastest growing subscription market in the world. As of 31 March 2003, growth was at 90%. Worldwide, DSL subscription grew by 15% in the first quarter of 2003 and outstrippIed every other economic indicator in the period. As a result, 41.3 million households and businesses around the world currently have a DSL connection over their standard telephone lines, according to London-based industry analyst Point Topic.

“DSL remains the fastest growing market in the world, heading for a global mass-market of 200 million subscribers by the end of 2005, even in the face of overall slow economic trends throughout the first quarter of the year,” says Tom Starr, president of the international DSL Forum.

“DSL is also the leading broadband technology with 56.5% of the world’s mass-market broadband subscribers, followed by cable modems at 38% and Gigabit Ethernet at 4.7%, according to Point Topic data,” he adds.

DSL has garnered 5.5 million subscribers in Q103. Western Europe and Asia-Pacific led that growth with over 1.9 million subscribers each in the quarter. Japan and the USA now vie for the greatest number of DSL connections in the world, each with about 7 million at the end of Q103. The fastest growing region in the Q103 was South-east Asia, where both mainland China and Hong Kong added over 30%.

Western Europe is also growing at above the average rate, increasing the number of homes and businesses with broadband DSL connections by as many as 20% in the quarter.
