As companies move increasingly towards becoming real time enterprises (RTE), they will underestimate their networking requirements, according to Gartner Group. The analyst house reports that 80% of enterprises will be forced to make last minute changes, amendments, upgrades and modifications to facilitate the roll out of RTE applications.

Gartner Group, however, recommends that enterprises examine network traffic and requirements thoroughly in preparation for RTE applications.

“To enable the real-time enterprise, an enterprise’s network requires higher availability, reduced latency, bandwidth on demand, and greater flexibility in quickly managing costs and services,” says Bill Clark, research director for Gartner Group.

“All of those requirements put increased pressure on network managers and the network management system,” he adds.

Garter Group has also outlined a four step plan to prepare networks for real time processing, which includes determining key business goals that must be supported by any changes; benchmarking of critical business processes; impact assessments of real time applications on business processes and identification of network requirements for real time applications.

“To react more quickly to opportunities and threats, business-unit leaders and top management must rely on an increased capability of their IT infrastructures to provide accurate notifications of key events,” comments Jay Pultz, vice president and research director for Gartner.

“Enterprises that take all of the important steps to ensure adequate networking performance will protect their investments in the RTE,” he continues.
