Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, chairman of Kingdom Holding Company, donated US $5 million to the American University of Beirut (AUB) to establish the Center for American Studies and Research (CASAR).

AUB president Dr. John Waterbury welcomed HRH and guests and introduced His Highness who announced a $5 million donation for the establishment of the Center for American Studies and Research (CASAR) at AUB.

Alwaleed would have initially enrolled in the AUB for his undergraduate education but went to the United States because of the Lebanese civil war. “I always find myself seized with admiration every time I open a book and read of the selfless dedication and vision that AUB’s founding fathers had when they embarked upon this educational enterprise,” Alwaleed told the audience attending the signing ceremony. “Their zeal could only have emanated from what can best be described as a “calling” -- a calling to cultivate in young minds a scientific spirit and a love for learning, to assist individuals in their search for self discovery, to instill a sense of mutual respect and tolerance within a community, and to sharpen the notion of civic responsibility.”

Alwaleed said his donation to establish CASAR, “is in an effort to deepen our understanding of the U.S., as well as to bridge the gap that emerged between the U.S. and the Arab World on the heels of the tragic events of September 11.” He added, “We are badly in need of an educated, objective and levelheaded portrayal of the United States that can serve as a corrective to the distortions that are spread about it in our midst. Bashing the United States will not help.”

The Center for American Studies and Research at AUB is the second CASAR in the Middle East to be founded by Prince Alwaleed. The first centre was established at the American University in Cairo (AUC), Egypt, in January, when Prince Alwaleed donated $10 million to finance both the construction of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUSS) building on the new campus of AUC, and the Center for American Studies and Research (CASAR) there.
