The Sims set to return

Everybody’s favourite dysfunctional PC family, the Sims, is set for a new lease of life as Electronic Arts has today announced it is developing The Sims 2 for an early 2004 release date.

Everybody’s favourite dysfunctional PC family, the Sims, is set for a new lease of life as Electronic Arts has today announced they are developing The Sims 2 for an early 2004 release date.

The new game boasts a raft of increasingly realistic features and players will now be able to control their Sims over an entire lifetime. Every choice made in the new game will have a relevant and dramatic effect on the life of a Sim, with the DNA of Sims now passed down through generations, giving players a scarily vivid and in-depth Sims experience.

“The Sims, themselves, always have been the most interesting part of the game experience for me. Giving them DNA makes them even more life-like and increases the personal connection between players and their Sims,” said Will Wright, chief game designer at EA’s Maxis Studio.

Guiding your Sims through ‘life’s big moments’ takes on new importance, as players now get a ‘life score’ to measure how well they are playing each individual Sim. The new game has been designed so that the decisions that players make throughout the lifetime of their Sims now have an impact on their long-term success or failure.

An entirely new 3-D engine has been developed for the game, and the Sims in The Sims 2 are more aware and responsive to both other Sims and their surroundings. The new Sims characters have been developed to express moods and feelings through more realistic body animations and, for the first time, facial animations. All this means that you will have to manage your Sims through all of life’s traumas including their first crush or losing loved ones.

The Sims 2 will be unveiled to industry insiders on May 13 at the Electronic Entertainment Exposition in Los Angeles.
