Cisco expands IP telephony solutions range

Cisco has released three new Internet Protocol (IP) telephony handsets and has updated its IP communications hardware and software products.

Cisco unveiled a number of enhancements and additions to its Internet Telephony (IP) range today, including three new handsets. The new range is intended to extend the benefits of IP telephony to a wider range of users in different kinds of organisation.

The new range includes one wireless handset, the Cisco 7920, which is aimed at users who are mobile within a single location, such as a hospital, university, warehouse or retail outlet. The 7920 operates seamlessly over an IP network through Cisco Aironet Series IEEE 802.11b wireless access points.

The other two handsets, the 7902G and 7912G are entry-level handsets that include the features of Cisco’s higher end models at the price of a standard digital telephone. By providing functions such as same in-line power and automatic configuration features at a similar cost to traditional telephone handsets, Cisco wants to push IP telephony into branch offices and to more desktops in large organisations.

“The business case for implementing a Cisco IP Communications system is increasingly driven by measurable gains in end-user productivity,” said Don Proctor, vice president and general manager for the Cisco Voice Technology Group. “Investments that increase the productivity of end users have a more compelling ROI than investments that only focus on IT support costs. If an enterprise makes an investment that increases the productivity of 5,000 end users by only 2%, that is like adding 100 more people to your staff.”
