Canon has today launched its new i-series of bubble jet printers that they say will offer increased speed, clarity and operating economy.

The latter is delivered via a new ink tank system that separates the colours required for printing into different tanks (black, blue, green, red and yellow) rather than lumping them together into either the colour or black tank.

The traditional tank system offers little in the way of value compared to the new Canon system where rather than replacing an entire cartridge, if you run out of yellow; you simply replace it with more yellow. The new Canon series, the i70, i950, i850 and i550, are all bubble jet printers and range from mid-range desktops to high-end portables.

All of the new Canon bubble jet printers boast USB connections but are lacking what many of Canon’s contemporary’s view as standard, Bluetooth connectivity. The i550 model, however, does offer infrared compatible wireless printing including the ability to print straight directly from a digital camera. A Canon spokesman said that they feel Bluetooth was still in the early stages of development but was still in the thoughts of the company for the future.

Today’s launch came as Canon Middle East looks to build on its recently announced 30% year on year Q1 growth in the region. “When you consider products such as the i70, incorporating high resolution, high speed permanent print head technology in a truly portable package, Canon truly has set the standard for desktop colour printing,” said a spirited Michel Sabbagh, marketing manager at Canon Middle East.
