If you thought Dubai’s real estate developers had done all they could to surprise you, think again.

Palm has revealed that the second Palm Island, located at Jebel Ali, will include 1060 ‘water homes’ that will be arranged in the shape of a verse of Arabic poetry. Those lucky enough to see the man made island from the sky should be able to clearly read the Arabic words of the verse, composed by HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

That wasn’t all, however, as the media was told that The Palm Jebel Ali will be some 50% larger than The Palm Jumeirah and will have a budget of around $2 billion. “The Palm Jebel Ali is being positioned as a major destination, a place of discovery, fun and excitement,” enthused Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of Palm.

Like The Palm Jumeirah, The Palm Jebel Ali will be based on the shape of a palm tree with trunk, fronds and crescent.

The 15.5 kilometre long crescent will consist largely of residential properties and the 2.4 kilometre trunk will be devoted to leisure facilities and hotels. Each of the 1060 water homes will include four bedrooms and will be built on top of concrete foundation poles.

Visitors and residents will access the island from one of three new bridges. A dedicated intersection leading to the island from the Sheikh Zayed Road is being looked at.

In a further ‘first’, Monday’s press briefing included a live ‘underwater press conference’ with a marine biologist. Using a live video linkup, the biologist showed journalists how the world looks beneath the waters around the island.

In a move clearly aimed at reassuring environmentalists, he claimed that fish were plentiful in the area and that larger species, such as stingray, have been spotted close by.
