Etisalat’s ISP unit, Emirates Internet and Multimedia (EIM), has made its Al-Shamil high-speed internet subscription service available over its cable network to meet growing demand.

The move will see households in Abu Dhabi and Dubai being able to access the Dhs300 per month broadband package through EIM’s existing cable infrastructure, which is mainly used to deliver digital TV services.

According to EIM general manager Maroua Naim, the move will complement the ISP’s copper network and ensure more extensive broadband coverage as higher bandwidth applications such as video streaming and internet learning come online.

“We are at a critical stage in the roll-out of broadband internet. With over 19,000 subscribers already using the service, it is essential that the network infrastructure is in place for the next phase of growth,” he said.

EIM said that the broadband cable service would be identical to its DSL equivalent in terms of pricing and user experience. The company also said it is looking at “a number of other technologies” capable of delivering high-speed internet services to the home.
