Visitors flock to Yahoo!

Yahoo! has reported 20% surge in traffic during March, fuelled by the war in Iraq. Within the region, over 100 million pages of Yahoo! were seen by more than 580,000 unique visitors from the United Arab Emirates alone.

Yahoo! has reported 20% surge in traffic during March, fuelled by the war in Iraq. Within the region, over 100 million pages of Yahoo! were seen by more than 580,000 unique visitors from the United Arab Emirates alone.

Aside from visting the news pages to read about Iraq, traffic from the region was also boosted by the Cricket World Cup as well as sporting events within the region.

“Yahoo! Sports had many headlines covering events in Dubai. ‘Tiger’s replacement stuns Els to win in Dubai,’ was one headline on Yahoo! Sports featuring the Dubai Desert Classic Golf tournament. Another headline reported that ‘top seeded Federer wins Dubai Open.’ While yet another Yahoo! Sports headline screamed ‘Moon Ballad runs away with Dubai World Cup’,” notes Dr. Irfan Ahmad, director of the Yahoo! ad sales office at Dubai Internet City,

The portal says that it is the most visited web site in the the Middle East North Africa region, with more than 5 million unique users generating 729 million pages every month. More than 80 different companies from the Middle East also advertised on Yahoo! in 2002 giving it the largest share of the region’s online advertising expenditure.
