Nexus Gulf Telecom Equipment is planning to roll out several pre-paid mobile airtime terminals in the United Arab Emirates, after striking a deal with Canadian software firm VendTek Systems.

The company, part of the Al Mazroui Group, will initially launch 60 point-of-sale terminals after licensing VendTek’s e-Fresh automated transaction technology in return for set-up, consulting fees and a share of revenues.

The venture, branded e-Pay, will offer pre-paid mobile and long-distance phone time to start with, but will be expanded to include pay-per-view and satellite services in the “near future”.

According to VendTek, the e-Fresh terminals can also be revised to include applications such as money transfers and distribution of electronic cash.

The system stores inventory on a central server which links to each terminal through a secure network. Users select the minutes or value of airtime they need on a keypad and pay through a similar system to debit cards, with a receipt printed at the terminal and then dialed into their mobile phone.
