3Com is updating its wireless networking products with a range of wireless LAN access points, which feature the 802.11a wireless standard. Additionally the networking vendor is releasing a range of upgrade kits to enable existing customers to move to 802.11a without replacing their hardware.

“3Com continues to drive innovations that offer practical solutions for customers,” comments John Yoon, senior director, wireless & security product management, 3Com.

“The modular design of our new wireless LAN access points are a perfect example — customers can now select the configuration of radios to best fit their organisation while removing the need to purchase add-ons like power devices and antennas,” he continues.

The three wireless LAN access points, which include the 8200 with 802.11b radio, 8500 with 802.11a radio and the 7800 with 802.11a and 802.11b radios, feature two configurable radio slots allowing customers to upgrade or change the radio boards to integrate new technology.

Additionally, the Wireless LAN Upgrade Kit, which comes in either 802.11a or 802.11b, features a radio board, an antenna board and other accessories to ease the upgrade tasks of users.

With 802.11b operating in the 2.4GHz band and providing connection speeds of up to 11 M/bits/s and 802.11a operating in the 5GHz band with connection rates up to 54 M/bits/s, 3Com claims is products provide a “unique” design that minimises any radio interference.

Furthermore, the 802.11a products feature a ‘turbo mode’ that enables them to drive speeds up to 72 M/bits/s. The products are also standards-based to ensure interoperability with most third party products and provide 40-bit WEP and 128-bit key encryption, as well as IEEE 802.1x, EAP-MD5, EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS and PEAP authentication.
