Tech Data is assuring reseller partners of its ability to operate in the region, following an announcement from chairman and CEO Steve Raymund that the company had drawn up evacuation plans for its Middle East staff.

On Monday Raymund had told analysts that the company had made contingency plans for the region because of the war in Iraq. “First and foremost, above anything else, we have to worry about the safety and well-being of our employees, so we have to look at every possible contingency,” he said.

However, the distributor’s Dubai head quarters has been quick to reassure its local partners that it will continue to operate normally.

“We have a strong, multinational team at Tech Data and barring a complete shutdown of the UAE I believe it highly unlikely that we would not be able to continue in our role as a Middle East distributor,” said Steve Lockie, managing director of Tech Data Middle East. “With multiple offices and warehouse locations in the region we are well positioned to continue business operations in the event of any situation.”

Lockie confirmed that the company does have contingency plans in place for the relocation of ‘at risk’ personnel, should it become necessary. As a multinational company, the distributor has to be prepared for any major incident that might affect its personnel or business, Lockie continued, and Tech Data continuously updates plans to deal with any business interruption.

“Clearly given the current situation we updated our local and EMEA plans to ensure that we had fully up to date information,” he said. “As part of the plan update we also conduct annual ‘incident tests’ whereby we convene a team around a fictional issue, for example a system failure or warehouse fire, and test the validity of our plans.”
