Intel has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the UAE Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) to accelerate the deployment of wireless networks throughout its 11 campuses.

The MoU was the second in as many days for Intel, which also signed an agreement with Dubai e-Government to encourage PC and internet penetration in the emirates.

The HCT MoU intends to drive the deployment wireless networks and transfer teachers and students to notebook machines across all college campuses. The agreement was signed yesterday by His Highness Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, chancellor of the UAE Higher Colleges of Technology and John Davies, vice president, sales & e-business solutions.

“Continuing our tradition of employing leading-edge technologies in our classrooms and colleges, we are proud again to be involved with Intel for this comprehensive nationwide and campus-wide IT deployment program,” says Sheikh Nahayan.

Selected HCT sites have been using wireless LANs and notebooks since 1999. Although details on the MoU are still vague, it is thought that HCT will introduce wireless networks in all its campuses and be an early adopter of Intel Centrino technology.

Other technology partners in the deal haven’t been announced.

“The HCT are world-leaders in the realm of deployment of the latest IT teaching tools for staff and students alike, and we are proud of our continued association with them,” comments Davies.

“The proposed systematic adoption by HCT of Intel’s Centrino mobile technology represents a world first, and sets the bench mark for the rest of the region to follow – Intel will continue to make available the latest IT hardware at affordable prices” he adds.
